Important updates for smartphone, BlackBerry ® and Office Sync to address daylight savings time change

Due to a change in the start of daylight savings time (DST), smartphone and BlackBerry subscribers will need to download and install software updates.

The update is necessary in order to ensure that time will display correctly on smartphone and BlackBerry devices during the 4 additional weeks of DST this year.

This issue is a result of the Energy Policy Act, passed by the United States Congress in August of 2005. This law changes the dates of both the start and end of DST. The change mandates that DST will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March) and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November) than the traditional date.

What should smartphone, BlackBerry ® and Office Sync users do to ensure their devices display the correct time?

Microsoft ® Windows Mobile ®
Microsoft has developed a Desktop Utility that can be used to update Windows Mobile devices running Windows Mobile 5.0. This utility is available at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/daylightsaving/default.mspx.

BlackBerry ? Research in Motion (RIM)
RIM has made updates to accommodate Daylights Savings Time changes available for both BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES) and BlackBerry handheld devices.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server update:

The BES Administrator will have to download an update for the Microsoft Exchange environment that can be found at http://www.blackberry.com/dst2007.

BlackBerry Device update:

Option 1: Using Blackberry Device On the Blackberry Device, users can visit http://www.blackberry.com/dst2007 and download the fix over the air.

Option 2: Using a PC and USB Cable
Using a USB Cable, users can visit http://www.blackberry.com/dst2007 on their PC browser and download the fix to their device via USB.

Option 3: BES Administrator Deployment: For BES users, the Administrator can wirelessly apply the patch to all devices.

Palm Treo
Treo devices from Palm Inc., running both Windows Mobile and the Palm OS ®, need to be updated so that they reflect the correct time when the new DST changes take effect. Without the Daylight Saving Time Updates, calendar events and email messages will indicate an hour off the actual time in locations that observe DST.

Office Sync
Customers using Office Sync from Alltel on the following mobile phones may experience email timestamps that are an hour off for up to one week while systems update. Please use the 'Check for Updates' feature within Office Sync to look for the software update to correct the issue.
